Distribution of radioactive elements in three progressively metamorphosed pelite series of the Bohemian Massif

Summary:Metamorphic grade-dependent variations in radioactive element content in pelitic rocks of three areas in the Bohemian Massif were studied. XRF was used in the determination of Si, Ti, Al, Fe, Mn, Ca, K and P; the concentrations of Th, U and K were determined by gamma -spectrometry. Radioactive element mobility increased with higher stages of metamorphism, usually starting in the garnet or biotite zone, and is especially characteristic of Th. A significant negative correlation of both Th and U content with SiO2 content was determined. U and Th behaviour also appear to vary with different types of metamorphism. [T.R.]
