Petrogenetic investigations of the uraniferous Precambrian metamorphic rocks, Charlebois Lake area, northern Saskatchewan

Summary:Petrographic evidence indicates that most rocks belonging to the Charlebois Lake and Pegasus Lake complexes (Tazin group), with the exception of the pink cross-cutting pegmatites, have suffered mild regional amphibolite metamorphism. A variety of features, including the presence of calc-silicates and rarity of igneous textures, suggest strongly that the bulk of the analysed rocks are metamorphosed supracrustals, mainly metasediments interbedded with metavolcanics. Only three rock samples show remnants of true igneous textures. The Charlebois Lake rocks show a virtual absence of post-crystalline deformation, in contrast to the very strong and ubiquitous dynamic deformation of the Tazin group metamorphics of the Beaverlodge area. Whereas the Beaverlodge area evidently formed part of a very active mobile zone, where rocks of at least partly Archaean age were sheared and mylonitized in the Hudsonian phase and are now polymetamorphic, the Charlebois Lake sector seems to be built essentially of Proterozoic supracrustal rocks, metamorphosed only once during the Hudsonian orogeny.
