Summary:Geological setting, compositions, and origins of French granitic rocks are presented, within the province in which they occur. Emphasis is placed on recent geochronological data. Apart from areas along the Channel coast and dated at 2000 m.y., the available information indicates that the geological history of France did not start until the end of the Proterozoic. Most granitic associations are related to orogenic magmatism and are either totally crustal in origin (leucogranites) or can be traced to calc-alkaline suites (granodiorites and quartz monzonites) that can be interpreted in different ways. These orogenic suites can be dated from the end of the Proterozoic, the end of the Devonian, the Carboniferous, and related to the Alpine orogeny. Anorogenic alkali granites are present in the Permian; pre-Devonian orthogneisses can be considered to belong to the same magmatic association. The position of granites in the general geodynamic history of France is reviewed. [T.R.]
