Summary:Small stratabound massive-sulphide deposits and weak disseminated-sulphide mineralization occur within a restricted stratigraphic interval for 190 km in the Dalradian supergroup. The deposits are contained in Argyll group metasediments which were deposited in an ensialic basin, part of the Laurentian shield, during the Late Proterozoic - Lower Cambrian. Some deposits were metamorphosed to greenschist and amphibolite facies during the Early Ordovician Grampian orogeny. The premetamorphic origin of the sulphides at three of the deposits is confirmed by sphalerite geobarometry (P = 6.1, 5.6, and 5.9 kbar, respectively). The sulphides have low trace-element contents, Co:Ni is >1 and <5 and S:Se is <5500:1, supporting a synsedimentary exhalative origin. [G.R.]
