Summary:The volcanogenic sulphide deposits at Avoca and Parys Mountain in the paratectonic Caledonides of the British Isles can be compared on the basis of a number of features: their ages are Late Ordovician to Early Silurian; their tectonic setting and relationship to sialic basement are similar; the associated volcanism is rhyodacitic and related to a series of close-spaced but isolated vents producing limited volumes of pyroclastics. Both deposits were affected by slumping; the presence of sulphide clasts in associated debris flows indicates the intimate relationship between volcanism and mineralization. The mineralization in both cases is a complex combination of cross-cutting and conformable sulphides, the latter being associated with chert and iron formation. Aspects of the environment of formation of these deposits can be contrasted with adjacent areas of volcanism of similar age, but which lack known exhalative sedimentary sulphide deposits. [G.R.]
