Summary:Sufficient data are available on the Tethyan ophiolites to develop more than one model. To pattern the behaviour of the Tethys on Atlantic or Pacific ocean models may result in serious errors; the Tethys belt was much more complex than the recent big oceans. [R.A.H.]
