Summary:The petrology, mineral chemistry and geochemistry of the N Apennine ophiolites are reviewed and discussed. Comparisons are made with other W Mediterranean ophiolites as well as with those of Vourinos and Troodos. The latter are explained as having originated by spreading processes occurring above a subduction zone close to an intraoceanic converging plate margin. [R.A.H.]
