Summary:In the Avoca district, folded Ordovician volcanic and sedimentary rocks contain stringers and more massive deposits of chalcopyrite and pyrite. Almost all the significant metalliferous deposits found in the last 20 years, however, have been in Carboniferous rocks and include Cu deposits at Gortdrum, Aherlow, Mallow, and Ballyvergin and those which are predominant in Pb and Zn, as at Tynagh, Silvermines, and Navan. At Ballynoe, Co. Tipperary, an important baryte deposit, accompanied by hematite and pyrite, occurs at the base of the Waulsortian mudbank limestones in the same position as the sulphide mineralization of the nearby Silvermines deposit.
