Summary:This is an expanded and revised version of the classic French book Essai de Caracterisation Sedimentologique des Depots Carbonates, Part 2, published in 1977, by Elf-Aquitaine (Centres de Recherches de Boussens et de Pau). It aims to present the basic concepts of environmental interpretation, creation and destruction of porosity in carbonate sediments. Processes that promote porosity interpretations are measured against a general profile from the land to the ocean basin, using physical, chemical and biological parameters. In this new edition, 13 detailed examples are given which highlight interpretations of carbonate sequences with good reservoir potential, the examples being chosen to cover surface and subsurface cases in various parts of the world.
