Summary:By the year 2000 there will be shortages of critical elements (including Hg, Ag, Sn, W, Pb, Cu, Ba, Zn) on a worldwide scale. The lack of a major US research effort to provide the fundamental knowledge needed to explore for elements in minerals not now exposed at the Earth's surface is deplored. Regional multi-element geochemical surveys are required; a study of chemical mining is worth continuing. [R.A.H.]
