New determinations of tin and tungsten in granites from South-west England

Summary:The Sn contents of granites of Devon and Cornwall determined by NAA are 12-54 p.p.m., i.e. much higher than the world average for granites (2-3 p.p.m.). Protolithionite and muscovite contained respectively 232 and 301 p.p.m. Sn (Cligga Head), and 36 and 66 p.p.m. (St. Michael's Mount). NAA determinations of W in the granites gave 9-28 p.p.m. (world average 1-2 p.p.m.), with W in protolithionite and muscovite 64 and 102 p.p.m. (Cligga Head), and 73 and 92 (St. Michael's Mount). Sn may also be present in other phases (biotite, cassiterite, epidote), the exact nature of the Sn-bearing mineral being controlled by the early, metasomatic recrystallization in the granites.
