Summary:Basalt dredged from the Naturaliste Plateau, a submarine plateau rising 2500 m above the surrounding ocean-floor of the SW corner of continental Australia, occurs as reworked cobbles in a manganiferous Quaternary slump mass which also contains detrital minerals of granite-gneiss provenance. The basalt is tholeiitic, has affinities with MORB and within-plate basalts, and is petrographically similar to the Bunbury basalt on the Australian mainland to the east. [J.A.H.]
