Summary:A statistical study was made of all new minerals described in the two five-year periods 1973-1977 and 1978-1982. Observations on how new minerals are named, their arrangement by anionic groups, crystal system, and countries in which most occurred are tabulated and discussed. The highest percentiles tend to be silicates, monoclinic, occurring in the USA or USSR, and are named for people. [G.W.R.]
