Summary:The geological results obtained in the English Channel by drilling four wells from a semi-submersible drilling vessel, Zephyr I, are summarized. Lithological descriptions are given of rock cuttings to depths of 873-1228 m, and are used in conjunction with shallow drilling and sampling data to re-assess the stratigraphy and structure of the western Channel. The Hercynian basement was proved only in one hole (8°20' W) where the oldest strata are low-grade metamorphosed, cleaved mudstones and slates of probable Devonian-Carboniferous age, which are known also to crop out at seabed around the granite bosses of the Scilly and Haig Fras areas; a thick metamorphosed Palaeozoic sequence of this type probably underlies much of the area. Permo-Triassic strata were penetrated in all four wells. The structural framework is defined by the presence of stable blocks of the fault-bounded Armorican massif, the Scilly-Cornubian platform, and the Start-Cotentin ridge. [R.A.H.]
