Summary:In polyphase aggregates, polycrystalline aggregates of a single mineral phase can be eliminated by diffusive phase dispersion, driven by a reduction of the grain boundary energy of the polyphase aggregate. Such dispersion may be expected in mylonitic rocks in high-T shear zones. Some strain-insensitive foliations may be steady-state foliations sensu stricto. Dispersion of silicate phases in amphibolite and granulite-facies mylonitic bands of the Ontario gneiss segment from the Grenville Province of Canada is illustrated. [R.A.H.]
