Summary:The lower ultramafic part of this ophiolite complex consists of a successive alternation of chromitite, dunite and harzburgite, repeated cyclically. This cyclic pattern is consistent with a magmatic cumulate origin but a superimposed tectonic pattern suggests a solid-state deformation at considerable depth. The chromites have properties in common with both podiform and stratiform chromites but from a structural viewpoint they are of podiform type. On the other hand, their high content of Fe, the strong interdependence between the composition of the chromite and the coexisting silicates, together with the cryptic layering, contrast markedly with podiform chromites. An alternative hypothesis is proposed which involves partial crystallization of an ultrabasic melt introduced to the magma chamber as periodic inflows of essentially the same composition (perhaps by stepwise partial fusion of an upwelling upper mantle).
