Summary:Massive tholeiitic metadolerite dykes cutting Dalradian metasediments on the islands of Jura and Islay are comparable chemically to other Dalradian metabasic rocks of the SW Highlands of Scotland. Trace-element geochemistry indicates that these dykes are less evolved than the overlying sills and volcanic rocks in mainland Argyllshire, consistent with their role as feeders to the sills and lavas. Expulsion of water from adjacent sediments and the establishment of large-scale hydrothermal systems may explain the abundance of post-crystallization spilitic alteration in the SW Highland metabasaltic rocks.
