Summary:The effect of the serpentinites, skarns and quartzites of the Outokumpu area on geochemical prospecting for sulphide ore, using glacial till and stream-sediment samples, has been studied in the Petainen area, S of Outokumpu. The concentrations of Cu, Ni and Zn in three different grain-size fractions were investigated: the <64 mu m and 64-500 mu m fraction was also examined mineralogically. In till and stream-sediment samples, Ni was the most sensitive indicator of the Outokumpu association but the quite separate black schists in the neighbourhood gave nearly as high metal values. Here the Ni/Co ratios, mineralogical assessments and stone counts were useful in interpreting the results. [R.A.H.]
