Geochemical study of acidic tuffs and siliceous shales from the Setogawa Terrane in the western part of Shizuoka City

Summary:Acidic tuffs (19) and interbedded siliceous shales (15) all from the Cainozoic Setogawa formation, central Japan, were analysed for major and minor components. Correlation between the contents of SiO2 and other components such as Al2O3 and TiO2 show that the siliceous shales are mixtures of silica particles from organic remains and subordinate clay materials, and that the acidic tuffs are similar in chemical features to rhyolitic to dacitic ashes of Recent volcanoes. In order to examine the origin of highly siliceous sedimentary rocks, the following two relationships are useful: SiO2/TiO2-Al2O3/TiO2 and SiO2/TiO2-Na2O/TiO2. Both Al2O3/TiO2 and Na2O/TiO2 hardly vary with variation of SiO2/TiO2 in the siliceous shales, while both ratios change in positive relation to each other in the acidic tuffs. [M.Ha.]
