Summary:These W deposits range in age from Jurassic to earliest Tertiary. They are of three types: Sangdong is a strata-bound scheelite deposit in calcareous horizons in early Cambrian slates; the richest ore occurs within a biotite-muscovite zone. A sub-economic diopside-garnet skarn surrounds the deposit; no granite is seen, but a granite cupola is postulated to underlie the deposit. At Weolag, a wolframite-bearing vein deposit lies in late Precambrian hornfelsed calcareous sediments near a large Cretaceous granitic pluton. The vein is rich in W relative to Mo in the upper zone, but becomes W-depleted as the vein enters the granite. At Ilkwang, a wolframite-scheelite breccia-pipe deposit occurs in a small quartz monzonite stock which intrudes a sequence of Upper Cretaceous sediments and pyroclastic rocks. The brecciated fragments were initially cemented by tourmaline and quartz, and finally by tungstates and sulphides. [R.A.H.]
