Distribution and origin of clay minerals in the shallow sea surrounding the Chinmen Island (Quemoy), Fukien, China

Summary:Syn-diagenetic transformation of land-derived clay minerals occurs in the embayed shallow sea surrounding Quemoy Island. The samples were analysed by XRD and petrography, chemical analysis, DTA and EM. Mesozoic granite-gneisses and associated dykes constitute the basement of the island and are overlain by Quaternary sediments. Clays from the area consist mainly of kaolinite and halloysite, with subordinate illite and smectite. Marine sandy mud and core samples from the shallow bay, show that kaolin is reduced but illite increased: the intensity ratio of 7 A/10 A changes from 10:1 in the land clays to approx 3:1 in the marine mud. The mud also contains newly-formed chlorite-like complexes. It can be seen from the cores that crystallinity and probably relative abundance of illite decreases downward. The same trend is shown to a lesser degree in the clay matrix of the muddy quartzose sandstone on the unconformity surface beneath the recent marine sediments. [R.E.S.]
