Clast composition and provenance of psammites in the Colonsay Group and Bowmore Sandstone, SW Argyllshire

Summary:The detrital clasts within these late Precambrian psammitic rocks of W Scotland include blue quartz with inclusions of rutile needles, feldspars, fragments of quartz granulite, deformed acid gneiss, pegmatites and vein quartz; the Bowmore sandstone also contains pebbles of chert and ferruginous sandstone. The widespread occurrence of blue quartz suggests a wide distribution of Scourian granulites within the Lewisian which formed areas of positive relief during the late Precambrian. [R.A.H.]
