Pre-Alpine eclogites in the Pennine basement complex of the Eastern Alps

Summary:Field relations for an occurrence of quartz eclogite in the Inner Schieferhulle unit of the Pennine basement complex in the SE Tauern window, Austria, suggest a pre-Alpine age for the primary eclogitic assemblage (garnet + omphacite + quartz + rutile), which is estimated to have crystallized at 620 + or - 100°C and 12 kbar. This assemblage suffered amphibolitic overprinting of Alpine and possibly Hercynian age. Representative microprobe analyses are given for 3 omphacites (Na2O 7.04-2.74%), 2 eclogitic almandines, 1 annular almandine, 2 hornblendes, 1 epidote and 1 albite. [R.A.H.]
