Summary:The offshore geology (as well as that of the surrounding mainland of Scotland) is outlined. The margins of the Moray Firth basin are largely fault-controlled, the Mesozoic strata being downfaulted against Old Red Sandstone. The Great Glen fault continues offshore, following the coastline and into Mesozoic strata; the south- easterly downthrow gradually decreases to the N, the fault dying out and passing into the NW limb of a broad syncline. The Quaternary geology of the area is described in detail and the distribution of clay minerals in till-like and other sediments is documented (with illite generally dominant over kaolinite); trace-metal analyses for clay fractions from 16 tills and red sediments from boreholes are tabulated. The surface sediments (those at present at the seabed) are also described. [R.A.H.]
