Summary:Hingganite-(Yb) is one of the late minerals of amazonite pegmatites of the Kola Peninsula and occurs as spherical aggregates of fine acicular crystals which grow on plumbomicrolite amidst albite, quartz and purple fluorite; a diorthosilicate of Yb having the structure of thortveitite is also associated. It is colourless with vitreous lustre; no cleavage; H. 61/2-7; Dcalc. 4.83; alpha 1.725, beta 1.738, gamma 1.760, 2Vgamma 65°, gamma :c 23°, alpha :a 20°; OAP parallel (010). Indexed XRD data are tabulated; strongest lines 3.13(10), 2.85(10), 2.572(8), 2.542(8), 1.977(8), 6.06(7) A; a 9.888, b 7.607, c 4.740 A; beta 90.45°; space group P21/a; Z = 4. Electron microprobe analysis gave Y2O3 8.56, Yb2O3 34.07, Er2O3 8.22, Dy2O3 2.47, Gd2O3 0.11, Lu2O3 4.50, Tm2O3 3.10, Ho2O3 1.03, Tb2O3 0.05, CaO 1.14, SiO2 22.11, BeO 10.90, H2O 3.74, = 100.00, leading to the idealized formula (Yb,Y)BeSiO4(OH). The IR spectrum has intense absorpion bands at 1000, 980 and 907 cm-1. Hingganite-(Yb) probably formed by the alteration of gadolinite. (From translation by M. Fleischer) [R.A.H.]
