Summary:This small island in the northern part of the Red Sea (23°-24°N) consists mainly of fresh spinel lherzolites which equilibrated last at a depth of >30 km in the mantle. The peridotite bodies are in tectonic contact with a metamorphic formation of gneissic and amphibolitic rocks, and peridotites and metamorphic rocks are both cut by several generations of basaltic dykes. Localized metasomatic mineralizations gave peridot, cancrinite, scapolite and garnierite. The uplift of upper mantle ultramafic bodies with fragments of crust might have occurred in the early stages of development of the rift which preceded the formation of the Red Sea. [R.A.H.]
