Summary:The Pan-African basement exposed in the Meatiq area, W of Quseir, consists of infracrustal rocks overthrust by a supracrustal cover. The infracrustal rocks were the result of the Meatiq orogeny and consist of granite-gneiss representing a deformed granite pluton emplaced 626 + or - 2 m.y. ago, and migmatitic gneisses and migmatized amphibolites of mixed igneous and sedimentary origin. The metasedimentary gneisses may represent older rocks in the sequence. The supracrustal cover represents part of an ophiolitic melange obducted during the following orogeny, possibly at an active continental margin. During the emplacement of the ophiolite melange the upper 2 km of the infracrustal rocks were deformed, converted to mylonitic-phyllonitic rocks and retrogressively metamorphosed under P-T conditions of greenschist-epidote amphibolite facies. Later, both basement and supracrustal cover were isostatically uplifted, folded into the Meatiq dome and intruded by a post-kinematic adamellite pluton at 579 + or - 6 m.y. [R.E.S.]
