Summary:Of two definitions, the authors consider the more appropriate definition of supracrustal sequences to be rocks 'at the surface of the Earth'. This volume contains papers on various aspects of Archaean crustal development and, to a lesser extent, the Archaean mantle. In this chapter introductory remarks are made on the basement, greenstone-granite gneiss terrains, deep crust and mantle, and the reactivation of Archaean terrains. [R.A.H.]
