Summary:Gold mineralization occurs throughout the Red Sea Hills as gold-quartz veins associated with the andesitic volcanic units. Investigations of the primary geochemical dispersion patterns have shown that the gold is usually restricted to veins and quartz-enriched altered wall-rocks. The mineral associations most often identified are gold-pyrite, gold-arsenopyrite-pyrite; gold-pyrite-chalcopyrite and gold-scheelite. Other minerals that sometimes occur with gold are galena, sphalerite, silver, tellurium, wolframite and cassiterite. Near the surface, the sulphide minerals are usually altered to reddish-brown limonite and may form a distinctive gossan. [J.M.H.]
