Summary:Three types of gold deposit have been differentiated within the acidic volcanic sequence of the Ariab-Arbaat volcanosedimentary series, in the westernmost central part of the Red Sea Hills, E Sudan. The three types are: 1) a quartz vein network in the vicinity of an intrusive syntectonic granodiorite, 2) mineralization of limited horizontal extent occurring in a strongly hydrothermally altered rhyolite, and 3) gold closely linked to gossans which, in the area south of Wadi Ariab, are the oxidized upper part of pyrite-rich massive sulphides. These sulphides were cut across by several cored drill holes contain and Cu-Zn-Au-Ag mineralization. [J.M.H.]
