Mineralogy and diagenesis of Lower Jurassic sediments of the Lossiemouth Borehole, North-East Scotland

Summary:The 70 m of Sinemurian and Pleinsbachian sedimentary rocks cored from this borehole are of the same age as hydrocarbon-bearing rocks in the N North Sea, and hence provide regional data for hydrocarbon exploration. The sandstones are subarkosic and sublitharenitic, with common authigenic feldspar and clay minerals. Syntaxial quartz overgrowths are attributed to early diagenesis, with kaolinite formation, and also to late diagenesis, following illite/smectite authigenesis. Ankerite replaces quartz in sandstone-shale interbeds. Muscovite and biotite form up to 50% volume in fine sandstone beds. Microprobe analyses of biotite relate to alteration state. Early diagenetic poikilotopic pore-filling calcite predates all other authigenic minerals. A southerly provenance of the sand is indicated. Early diagenesis occurred in low-ionic concentration water with dissolution forming secondary porosity and kaolinite. Later cementation by illite and K-feldspar occurred in concentrated pore-water, probably from mineralization, followed by late-diagenetic quartz cementation in clean sandstone, or ankeritic cement in sandstone/shale sequences.
