Summary:The rare Be-Mg-Al silicate surinamite occurs in biotite-kyanite + or - garnet pseudomorphs after - apparently beryllian - cordierite in granulites from E Zambia. A Mg-Al-rich beryllium source and a relatively high-P metamorphism in the upper amphibolite or granulite facies are apparently essential for the formation of surinamite. [J.A.Z.]
