Present-day manner of movements of the Coastal Range, eastern Taiwan, as indicated by triangulation changes

Summary:Geodetic triangulation in Taiwan was first performed between 1914 and 1921, and repeated between 1976 and 1979. However, an earlier retriangulation was made in 1971 in an area of some 180 km2 immediately SW of Hualien on the east coast of the island. This survey clearly reveals that each of the resurveyed stations on the northernmost segment of the Coastal Range in the area, has been translated N-NE for a distance of >3 m in relation to all the stations fixed in position in the Central Range sector of the same area. The Coastal Range is probably not now moving as a huge thrust mass or as a strike-slip giant block, but is dislocated into many longitudinal fault blocks by internal differential movements. Each block may move as a thrust block or a wrench-fault block, or both. Hence, the movement pattern of the Coastal Range today is not represented simply by one dominant tectonic style, but is a compression + shearing version, on which thrust tectonics are overprinted with sinistral wrench-fault tectonics, particularly in the northern half of the range.
