Diagenetic pyrite formation and sulphur isotope fractionation associated with a Westphalian marine incursion, northern England

Summary:Pyrite textures are described and stable S-isotope data are presented for the Alton marine horizon in the Westphalian of Penistone, central N England. The earliest diagenetic pyrite is dispersed as framboidal and related textures. Later pyrite, in the marine shale, coal and ganister is more localized but more intense, in a variety of textures. Most is pre-compactional in age; marcasite is rare and mainly late. delta 34S ranges -35.31 to +20.39per mille and, with lighter values in the marine part of the sequence and heavier values in the sediment below the coal, relating the earliest pyrite deposition in the coal to the depositional fresh water and also the main pyrite deposition to the influx of marine water sulphate.
