Existence of multiple kaolinite phases and their relationship to disorder in kaolin minerals

Summary:Although structural disorders, such as + or - b/3 layer translations and random aluminium vacancies explain many of the deformations of diffraction profiles observed for kaolinite, they do not contribute to asymmetry in 001 profiles or the appearance of 'anomalous' peaks in some diffraction patterns of poorly-crystallized kaolinites. The presence of multiple phases is (theoretically) shown to cause both disparities in measured values of kaolinite physical properties (e.g. unit cell dimensions, DTA curves and IR spectra, and free energy of formation) and certain observed diffraction effects that are not explained by random disorders.
