Summary:The gravity field gives important information about the deep structure of the Rhenish massif and is presented as the Bouguer anomaly, the free air anomaly and the geoid. The Bouguer anomaly contour map is still a preliminary map; the anomaly is positive over the eastern massif and negative over the western. It shows a peculiar ring pattern about a centre in the east Eifel/Neuwied basin region and a pattern of narrow lows radiating into the western quadrants. Most of these features correspond with distinct tectonic units. Special attention is given to the problems of constructing a homogeneous gravity map from inhomogeneous data. [J.M.H.]
