Chemical variations in phengitic micas of successive foliations within the eclogitic micaschists complex, Sesia-Lanzo Zone, (Italy, Western Alps)

Summary:The composition of phengitic micas (15 microprobe analyses) is shown to be influenced by the microstructural sites in polydeformed high-P metagranites from this area. In these rocks, an evolutionary trend of decreasing phengitic character is found in grains oriented in three successive regional foliations of the Alpine tectonic cycle. This trend reflects the re-equilibration shown by the country rocks of the metagranites. Compositional variations within the mica grains of a single crenulation cleavage are related to their mechanical or deformational history. In metamorphic tectonites it is suggested that variations in grain compositions may be related both to P-T conditions and to particular deformation sites. [R.A.H.]
