Summary:The Permo-Carboniferous metamorphic terrains of the outer and inner Ligurian Brianconnais of Italy are characterized by predominant rhyolitic and subordinate andesitic lavas and volcanogenic sediments. The latter are generally intercalated with fine metasediments and seem to be contemporaneous with scattered rhyolitic products but slightly older than the principal Lower Permian ones. Geochemical data show the rocks to be calc-alkaline. The andesites may result from crustal anatexis caused by isostatic sinking, as a consequence of possible crustal thickening generated by a Sudetian phase. [J.M.H.]
