Summary: | Techniques involving total organic carbon determination, pyrolysis, visual kerogen typing, spore colour and vitrinite reflectance have been used to assess the content of organic matter and maturation level of potential hydrocarbon rocks from the Devonian Orcadian basin. The main development does contain significant Middle Devonian and minor Lower Devonian hydrocarbon source rocks with oil- and gas-prone material which are still in the oil window for most of the succession.
