Rare earth elements and neodymium isotopes in ferromanganese oxide coatings of Cenozoic foraminifera from the Atlantic Ocean

Summary:Samples of Fe-Mn oxide coatings of biogenic carbonate (with minor volcanic glass and terrigenous debris), from the Rio Grande Rise (DSDP Site 357), and dated as 0-60 m.y., were treated for removal of foraminiferal tests. These were analysed for REE, Nd and Sr by MS, Fe, Mn by AAS, Ca by titration. The REE contents of the coatings are similar to those of Recent samples, but Cainozoic coatings have been modified diagenetically under suboxic conditions to give a different REE pattern, though the original 143Nd/144Nd ratios have been preserved. The Nd isotopic curve for Cainozoic sea-water in the S Atlantic shows temporal trends. Except for the oldest samples, Nd and Sr isotopic compositions vary inversely. The changes reflect global changes in Nd and Sr proportions from a continental input and weathering of tuffs, and different response times of Nd and Sr to changes in oceanic input. The Nd isotope curve may be a useful tracer of ocean palaeochemistry. [R.K.H.]
