Hessite and electrum from the Ratagain Intrusion, North-west Scotland

Summary:These minerals occur in narrow quartz-calcite-fluorite veins cutting quartz monzonite on both sides of Loch Duich; they are associated with pyrite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite, molybdenite and rutile. For hessite, the mean of 9 analyses gave Au 0.39, Ag 61.83, Te 37.13, S 0.17, Cu 0.38, Fe 0.14, = 100.04; the mean of 2 analyses of electrum gave Au 67.39, Ag 30.08, Te 0.03, S 0.03, Cu 0.07, Fe 0.09, = 97.69. Textural evidence suggests that both minerals were formed at the same time by replacement of galena. [R.A.H.]
