Summary:Eight discrete normal polarity magnetozones have been identified within the predominantly reverse polarity period of deposition of these sediments which extend from the Thanet formation to the top of the Bracklesham group. Magnetozone boundaries are here equated with absolute time planes and may be used for correlation and for studying sedimentation patterns. Results show that events in the London Clay were virtually instantaneous, whereas the Bracklesham cycles are diachronous, occurring earlier in the E. An associated paper (Aubry, Hailwood & Townsend, submitted for publication) discusses the correlation of magnetozones with the geomagnetic polarity reversal time scale based on marine magnetic anomaly patterns, and contributes towards the fitting of UK sections into a world-wide Palaeogene chronostratigraphic framework.
