Summary:Stratiform Zn-Pb mineralization occurs within the Indian plate, around Besham. It is contained within a supracrustal sequence of metamorphosed sediments which have been thrust over a basement gneiss complex. Varying proportions of pyrrhotite, pyrite, baryte, clinopyroxene, quartz, garnet, actinolite, pyroxmangite, feldspar, carbonate and magnetite are associated with the ore. The silicate minerals are Mn-rich and the host-rocks are Ba-rich; this aids exploration, as the signature differs from the skarn minerals formed later by intrusion of pegmatites. The stratiform nature of the mineral deposits in a well-defined stratigraphy enhances the exploration potential both in Besham and in the Indian plate. [R.E.S.]
