Summary:Recent stable-isotope data indicate that significant mantle heterogeneities exist for both O and H isotopes. Mantle O-isotope variation may be the result of crystal-liquid O-isotope fractionations at high T during partial melting, or of remelting of subducted altered oceanic crust. Mantle H with relatively high D/H ratio, as found in amphiboles from mafic/ultramafic inclusions in calc-alkaline rocks, is probably derived from dehydration of subducted hydrated basaltic oceanic crust, while mantle H with low D/H ratios may be truly 'primordial'. Combined stable and radiogenic isotope variations within suites of recent volcanic rocks from Grenada, Roccamonfina and the Andes have identified the involvement of crustal material both by recycling into mantle source-regions and by crustal contamination of ascending magmas.
