Summary:In the Connemara schists of W Ireland, quartz veins formed important, but individually short-lived pathways for fluid flow through the pelitic horizons. The veins developed more extensively when ductile deformation occurred at the same time that fluids were being released by reactions. The quantities of fluid involved in precipitating the quartz veins are large and over some groups of outcrops amount to an overall fluid-rock ratio >1:1. [R.A.H.]
