Summary:A Na-Al mica was synthesized by hydrothermal reaction of sodium tetraborate with topaz in the range 350°-560°C, 2 kbar. The plates reached a size of 20 mu m diameter X 1 mu m thick. X-ray and optical data lead to the formula Na(Al2Al1/3box 2/3)(Al2Si2O10(OH,F)2). This mica is presumed to be an ephesite where Li in the octahedral layer is replaced by Al and vacant sites. [I.Kb.]
