Summary:This volume contains 40 papers representing the proceedings of the Copper Symposium held on the occasion of the 27th International Geological Congress in Moscow, USSR, in 1984. There are four parts: Deposits in mafic and ultramafic complexes; Porphyry deposits; Deposits of volcanic-hydrothermal association; and Sediment-hosted deposits. Most authors writing about Cu-Ni deposits in Part I reach the conclusion that these are the consequence of interaction of mafic or ultramafic magma and near-surface country rocks. In Part II, emphasis is placed on the plate-tectonic setting of porphyry deposits, and on the histories, compositions, sources and flow patterns, and physicochemistry of the mineralizing fluids. Part III comprises a series of papers dealing with sulphide ore deposits hosted in volcanic and volcanosedimentary deposits, and the final part deals with mineralogical, petrographical and chemical studies, and with detailed descriptions of copper deposits, including genetic interpretations. (Abstracts of all papers are included in the Economic Section of this issue of Mineralogical Abstracts.) [R.A.H.]
