Summary:The basalts of the Scoresby Sund region and the northern Blosseville Kyst form part of the extensive cover of Tertiary plateau basalts in central east Greenland. Structurally the area can be divided into two: an extensive inland area of almost flat-lying basalts, and a narrow strip along the Atlantic coast which is block-faulted and cut by a dyke swarm subparallel to the faulting and coastline. The basalts are all tholeiitic and vary from MORB-types to high Fe-Ti basalts with TiO2 1.2-4.4% and MgO 11.3-4.8%. The succession is divided into five formations based on variations in lithology and flow morphology. The lava succession consists of two cycles of magmatic activity with TiO2 values falling upwards in each cycle, and the remains of a third cycle. These cycles can be correlated with the stages in the history of opening of the North Atlantic ocean. [J.M.H.]
