Summary:In the S Alps, near Corvara in Badia, N Italy, three sills have been intruded in the Wengen formation of Upper Ladinian age. The petrochemistry, paragenesis and structural features of these sills, and the composition of their minerals, lead to their classification as alkaline lamprophyres of the monchiquitic type. K/Ar dates give 67 + or - 3 m.y. while Rb/Sr results indicate 69.8 + or - 3 m.y.; the initial 87Sr/86Sr ratio of 0.70751 + or - 0.00002 is consistent with data for three apatite crystals separated from the dykes, and indicates an anomalous Sr ratio in the source area of the mantle. It is suggested that these lamprophyres belong to the Tertiary Venetian magmatic province. A re-examination of some lamprophyres in the Fiscalina Valley approx 45 km NE of Corvara indicates that they are leucite lamproites or kamafugites and give an Rb/Sr age of 34 m.y. [R.A.H.]
