Summary:A petrographic study of Oligo-Miocene pelitic sediments of the Vetto-Carpineti syncline in the Emilia-Romagna region of Liguria, Italy, is reported in conjunction with semi-quantitative analyses of the layer silicate components. The Antognola formation has a predominantly smectitic nature whereas the underlying Ranzano formation is distinctly illitic. The serpentine:chlorite ratio is >1 for the Antognola sediments and always <1 for those of the Ranzano formation. The uppermost part of the Antognola formation and the basal part of the overlying Bismantova formation are characterized by the frequent occurrence of cristobalite and by an episodic appearance of zeolites; these minerals apparently reflect significant contributions from intrabasinal volcanic activity.
